As obedient children,
do not be conformed to the passions
of your former ignorance,
but as he who called you is holy,
you also be holy in all your conduct,
since it is written,
“You shall be holy, for I am holy.”
(1 Peter 1:13-16)
Who among us can hear these words from your Law,
When the standard of our holiness is none other than yourself?
The object of our conformity is the perfect, transcendent radiance
Of your eternal, everlasting perfection.
The conduct of our lives exposes the passions in our hearts,
And your demand on us goes much deeper than our deeds.
We need new hearts;
We need alien affections.
Jesus, you are the only one here whose life reflected the Father.
From the wellspring of your heart, crystalline purity issued forth;
The fruit of your labors proved to the world the root of your affections,
As you loved the Father with your heart, soul, mind, and strength
O Holy Spirit, graft us in to the vine of Christ,
Tether our very souls to the fountain of living water in Jesus.
We are done with the legalism that staples good fruit to dead branches;
Make us alive through the Word of Christ,
Even as we confess our sin to you, we pray. Amen
